Conclusion:

Provenance data remain inconclusive. It is not known how or from whom Ernst Schmidt acquired the painting in or before 1944. It furthermore remains unknown whether Mendel purchased the painting directly from Hoffman, or whether the painting was owned by others prior to Mendel's acquisition before 1967.
